Summary

The purpose of this module is to allow you to develop your skills in the design, creation and editing of professional standard wordprocessed documents. During the module you will create a small portfolio of four documents that are relevant to your area of interest and chosen by you. In order to create those documents you will need to be competent in the use of a range of word processing functions and techniques. The quality of the final portfolio will demonstrate the level of competence you have achieved.

You will use the discovery learning techniques described in the Discovery Learning page on this site to gather the resources you need to develop your skills and knowledge. You will be supported throughout by a tutor who will provide guidance when needed. As you develop your documents you will be submitting drafts for comment and advice and you will be commenting on your experience in a reflective log.

The word processing competence map shows the four phases of development for word processed documents and you will be cyclicly repeating these phases for each document you produce. The first phase is always the design phase where you explore the design features of the document you are about to produce. This will indicate the actions that then need to be taken to create the document, and hence the word processing skills you will need to complete that part of the exercise.

The Task

The task is to create a portfolio of four wordprocessed documents that demonstrate a broad level of competence in designing, creating and editing documents using word processor software. You will select four different types of wordprocessed document that are relevant to your personal area of interest and will follow the four stage document creation process demonstrating the use of appropriate wordprocessing functions and techniques.

The process will begin with you going to your personal page and posting a message on your discussion forum to announce that you are starting the module. Your tutor will respond by asking to nominate the types of document that you would like to produce and will discuss the range of word processing skills and functions you will need to complete them. If you have difficulty in deciding which document types to choose, the tutor will be able to advise.

After that it's up to you! You will be advised to visit the module start-up page where practical advice will be given about how to organise your work and how to quickly find the resources you need to complete all the activities that lead to a completed document. You will be asked to submit drafts of documents at frequent intervals for comment and further advice. You will also be asked to contribute to the module reflective forum where other learners will also be sharing their expereinces. Good luck, and we hope you enjoy the experience!

This is my Tutor page and will be used as a bit of a testbed for Wetpaint functionality as I experiment with various features. For the moment the page will look a bit of a mess, but all will become organised in due course. To start with, here's where I work most days:

This wouldn't be possible without flat screens would it? It makes working with multiple, linked documents (which I do a lot) very convenient. I can also have my main email windows, as well as my video conference window, available on the side screens with my main working document open on the centre screen. The keyboard and main mouse are switchable between the three computers involved and the other two mice(?) are there to navigate the non-connected computers when one is selected. Everything is wireless linked to the Internet and the printer via an ADSL gateway.

This is my first attempt at wordprocessing using this site (wearing a 'raw' student cap). I can use Bold, Italics and Underline by clicking on the toolbar icons, which appears similar to the normal Office toolbar. Trial and error method here is clearly woking - oops, spellcheck needed ... yes, spellcheck works and has higlighted the errors as expected.

OK, now that I have found out the basics, I will refer to the document map and return here. mmm .. but I can't find it from this page .. will contact ,my tutor for help. Mmm ... not straightforward trying to find the link that allows me to contact my tutor - getting a little frustrated and the screen is a little overwhelming to me, a slight technophobe who relies desperately on user-friendliness. OK, I'll move on anyway.

I want to find a picture to insert into this document..... return later when I've found something of interest.

Aha! here's a great source http://www.baycongroup.com/wlesson0.htm The picture based lesson is nice and easy to follow and seemingly ideal for beginners like me. I'm becoming very familiar now with the 'Easyedit' button and getting to grips with the programme (although the pop-up (Edit Note) everytime I save is a bit annoying). Oh, just noticed a 'Suggest Links' button - I'll explore ... no, the Suggest Links button leads nowhere. Let's try the 'Photo' icon and try to insert a photo ... Ah, I get it, this loads up the photos that have been entered into the site - but I really want to add a photo from my PC, I'll deal with this later.

Found more useful ones on YouTube but found it difficult to dentify them via the Search engine box - perhaps a mechanism that will recognise the website link would help.

Let's go back now and see if I can insert a picture into this page ... aha, success and quite easy once I got the gist of how it's done.

GRRR .... NOW I'M ANNOYED! The last half hour's work has been lost because I couldn't save ... the EasyEdit toolbar shifted to the bottom of the page and as I tried to access it, it continually moved. I eventually had to admit defeat and close the page without saving AND ... THIS HAPPENED TWICE!! I noticed that this happens when I try to move the toolbar over a little ... I certainly won't do that again. I have also found that saving regularly as I go alone to safeguard my work in progress is unsatisfactory because I have to go back inot edit mode again. And, this is slow on my machine as it re-loads ... not sure if this is a weakness in the WEtpaint program or my machine, whcih has been acting up lately. Whatever, not too impressed with these annoying quirks and as a student, I feel that it is undermining my motivation.

Let's try to add my conference presentation (Powerpoint) ... oh, seems I can only add a Pp presentation form the web .. what a disappointment. Must be missing something here - it can't be too difficult surely?

Mmm ... I'm cheating here - I should be following Tony's suggestion of guidance using that competence map ... must find it. Let's try again ...
Nope ... found the tutor's page but no map. OK, I'll plod on regardless. Getting really frsutrated though with the speed of this machine - it takes an average of 30 secs to load up anything, and I'm such an impatient bloke. Will try to access this programme fom my home PC to find out where the problem lies ... the 'tutor' side of me believes that education works only when learners enjoy the experience and frustration is always a negative emotion.

Refining the Search Engine

Adding Websites to the Customised Search Engine When you come across really good websites you can add them to the websites used by Google to improve its search for relevant content. To do this you need to:

Respond to the emailed invitation to contribute to the Word Processing search engine by going to the website address given in the email and following the instructions to register
Use your existing Google account login if you have one. Otherwise, create an account using the link on the website.
Go to the page you want to add to the search engine.
With the page showing in the browser look for ‘Google Marker’ in the browser ‘Links’ toolbar.
In the Google Marker window add the site as an ‘Annotation’ to the list the search engine uses (only add the page, not the whole site).

Alternatively, if you find a site that is really poor, not relevant or is commercial, then you can use the option to ‘Exclude’ the site from the priority list.

Editing your learner page

You can edit your learner page by logging on, going to your page and clicking in 'EasyEdit'.
The editing window will open and you can enter text and graphics in the same way you would in a normal word processed document.

In the EasyEdit toolbar you will see a number of editing options that allow you to change the size, colour and font type of your text.
You also have the options of adding photographs/graphics and also to include tables.

When you have finished editing, save the changes by clicking the 'Save' button.

You will be encouraged to regularly update your personal page with work that you produce during your online course. This will include displaying the documents you produce using Slideshare. See the 'Using Slideshare' mini-module for guidance.

Learning
We all learn new things each day. We have grown up learning and the time we spent at school or college was intended to help us in that process by giving access to teachers and learning resources. The Internet now provides us with similar help but outside these formal systems. You can choose your area of interest, decide the level of skills and understanding you need to meet your goals, and then use the Internet to find and use the learning resources you need.

Discovery Learning
Discovery learning means that you have control and make all the decisions about your learning. You decide what you want to know about or want to be able to do and then go looking for the help you need to achieve it. The Internet allows you to do this very efficiently and the process of discovering the resources you need helps in the learning.

How this Website can help
The e-College Website has been designed by experienced teachers who know how learning works and how the Internet can be used by individual learners to achieve their goals. Often those goals will be specific and achievable in a very short space of time: how do I set up my new mobile phone to play my favoutire ring tone? Some times they will be much more extensive: I want to gain an MBA qualification but I have to fit it around my work and family commitments. Discovery learning and the Internet provides a route to achieving both and this site is designed to show you how.

How You can help
What we're doing here is experimenting with new ways of facilitating learning. We need the help of people who are active learners and want to find better and more effective support for their learning. If you believe, as we do, that the Internet is a fantastic new gateway to learning opportunities, then we'd like to invite you to join us in demonstrating its potential. How to Use this Site
On the left of the screen is a list of pages on the site that you can navigate to by clicking on them. The Learning Modules page takes you to the modules that have been set up for everyone to use. Choose the module you want to follow and this will take you to the module guidance page(s) and the discovery learning gateway for that module.
As a registered learner you will have your own personal page and discussion forum to be found in Learner Pages. Use the forum to maintain a reflective log of your learning experience and communicate with your module tutor. Use the page itself to link to your working documents and any other resources or websites you find useful.
