Word Processing Module OverviewThis is a featured page

You use a word processor to create documents containing text and graphics. The documents can range from something as small and simple as a letter to something large and complex as an instruction manual for a new product. Whatever document you are planning to create, the likelihood is that it has been done before and that there are examples and templates available to help you design it.

In this module you will be creating four different documents as you develop your word processing skills.

The first thing for you need to do is to decide what four documents you will create to complete the exercise. You will be here to improve your word processing skills for a reason and that is likely to be because you have documents in mind that you want to be able to produce competently. Maybe for work, maybe for your own personal use.

If it is for work, for example, your four choosen documents may be: a business letter, a project report, a marketing leaflet and a product catalogue. If it is for your personal use you may choose to create a personal letter, a CV, a newsletter and an academic paper.

Having decided on your documents and discussed this with your tutor on your personal forum, you will select the first document to be created and then go to the Word Processing Competence Map to find the resources needed to help you complete it. All the time your tutor will be available for advice and guidance on the skills required and how to discover the most appropriate resources.

You will begin each time with document design, where you specify the layout, content and visual features of your document. Having done this you will look for standard document layouts and word processor templates that you can use to create an initial draft by entering your text and graphics.

You may wish to edit the content and change the layout to arrive at your final draft document. In doing so you will gain a growing understanding of word processor functions and skills in their use. The final part of the process will be refining your document and including, where appropriate, features such as page numbering, contents lists, graphical objects and the appropriate use of fonts, styles, colours, shading and other presentation variables.

The whole process will be repeated with your second document, third and then fourth. All the time you will be creating drafts, finding out more about word processing functions and how to use them, discussing developments with your tutor and learning from similar activities carried out by other learners.
