Introduction

There is general agreement that when the learner is active in the process of achieving their learning goals, then the process is more effective and enduring. The learning approach applied here is designed to encourage learners not only to set their own learning goals, but to agree with the tutor the practical outcomes of their work they will use to demonstrate the level of competence they have achieved. For example, when a learner states that they want to develop their word processing skills, they will be encouraged to identify a range of documents that are relevant to their interests and use the creation of those documents as the vehicle to develop those skills.

Discovery learning is where the learner is guided through the process of identifying appropriate sources of information and learning activities rather than just being presented with them by the tutor. It involves the learner making a judgement about which resources best suit their needs and selecting those that take them to the level of competence they are aiming for. The learner learns how to facilitate their own learning.

Discovery Learning and the Internet

The Internet has made this possible by providing access to global information resources covering every aspect of human activity and knowledge. Not only is the volume of information growing every day, it is being contextualised and presented in a way that makes it ideal for educational purposes. At the same time, the growth of Web 2.0 services and the resource identification and presentation functionality of Google and similar applications has provided the gateway to global resources needed to make discovery learning a realistic and attractive alternative to conventional teaching methods.

On this website, learners are invited to experience Internet based discovery learning. A number of ICT modules have been developed that enable learners to develop their skills in the use of desktop computer applications such as wordprocessing, spreadsheets and presentations. The discovery learning method involves the use of a web page containing a visual map of the competencies developed by each module. Each of the competencies on the map is linked to a tuned search engine that provides a gateway to appropriate resources. The learner uses the resources, supported by the tutor, to complete the module tasks.

How the Modules Work

Each module will involve a series of tasks for the learner which, when completed, will demonstrate an agreed level of competence. With each task will be a list of skills they will need in order to successfully complete it. The learner will agree the tasks to be completed and will then use the competence map gateway to access resources needed to undertake the first task chosen for completion. They will be invited to submit drafts for comment and also to contribute to the module forum and their own reflective log. Opportunities will exist for learners to share their experiences and to set up their own social networks should they wish.
